Special Recognition Award and Runner-Up in Category - Inspection of Difficult to Access Structures
In 2014/15 Cappagh Consult Ltd were undertaking Bridge Inspection work with Ringway Jacobs on the Transport for Buckinghamshire Contract where we recognised that there were a significant number of culvert type structures throughout the County where access and inspection had proved difficult. Many of these structures are quite small and using traditional means to view the inside of the pipes would require staff to crawl through the culvert or where CCTV was used the quality and usability of the output was not necessarily of the standard required.
Our aim was to devise and develop a system which could reduce costs and increase the end product quality and productivity, we also wanted a system that was safer to use, required less manual handling and removed the exposure risk to staff.
We believe our system is a true innovation, combining various components to develop a system that has proven to be versatile and adaptable for the purpose of inspecting those difficult to access structures. The simplicity of the design in bringing together a readily available and proven camera mounted on a stable platform could work on any small culverts, or even larger structures. The whole system has reduced the exposure to staff working above water, along the highway and has also reduced the cost of hiring equipment and outsourcing work to specialist companies. The reduced manpower required for this system is also beneficial in terms of budget. We also believe that this system has lowered our carbon footprint in the fact that no generators are used with the new system and less traffic management is also required, thus reducing the need for standing traffic.
We were encouraged to enter and display our system at the Eurovia UK 2016 Innovation Awards and were delighted to receive a Special Recognition Award as well as Runner-Up in Category
One Client said of the system "Cappagh's ingeniously simple adaptation of existing technology that allows a camera to both float and be wheeled over obstacles is so simple, so cheap and so good that it is deeply frustrating that it hasn't been done before. The good news though is that now it does exist and Cappagh Consult Ltd deserves considerable recognition for seeing the problem from a Client point of view and developing a product that allows these assets to be viewed cost effectively and with so little risk"
Another Client said "Fantastic, its giving us benefits in terms of efficiency and in terms of operations and this is allowing us additional budget to spend on other necessary things. I would say congratulations and well done for developing it"
